Be careful, the doors are opening
For some, the metro is a vehicle of reduced comfort, but for others it is their home. Plot Last Light develops in 2034 and continues the story of the first part of the game. The “bad” ending of Metro 2033 was chosen as the scenario basis – the Blacks, unable to reach Artyom, were destroyed. A post-apocalypse infested with monsters still reigns on the streets of Moscow, the subway remains the only refuge. It’s difficult to say what poses a greater danger to people: the creatures outside or the conflicts tearing the metro apart from the inside. The developers say that, despite the fact that forty percent of the game time will be spent on the streets, squabbles and wars between factions and stations in the metro itself will play a significant role in the plot. A significant place will be devoted to socio-psychological issues – both in the book and in the first part of the game, the subway was a miniature model of human relations in real society. However, there is a place for mystical elements in history.
We will continue our adventures around the capital and under it in the role of Artem. He is no longer a green boy, but an experienced warrior who knows a lot about destroying monsters. The second part should explain to us why Artyom was immune to the telepathic power of mutants. The developers interspersed a series of flashbacks into the storyline, sending the player to the hero’s mysterious childhood. The second narrative line should create strong suspense.

The authors honestly and without shame admit that Last Light – a corridor shooter, and they don’t try to diversify it with elements of choice. And there’s nothing wrong with that. After all, “Metro”, as we know it, is a really high-quality and, most importantly, original action movie, which could sometimes please with good dialogues, and sometimes intimidate with some kind of horror scene.
Atmospheric depth here is achieved due to the rich design of the subway, as well as the ubiquitous representation of the life of metro residents. In existing game videos, characters perfectly create the illusion of life: drying clothes, fishing, eating in underground catering establishments. Street landscapes also add great atmosphere. It’s spring outside, meltwater is spreading through the streets, lightning occasionally flashes in the skies, and there is a ghostly fog. Weather effects and location design really make you feel the despair and emptiness of the recreated post-apocalypse.
Metro is a high danger zone
The developers promise to significantly increase the level of cinematography and entertainment in the new game. This applies not only to the significantly increased number of cut scenes, but also to the gameplay itself. So, in Last Light Physics will be improved, and destructibility of the environment will be introduced. Of course, you won’t be able to cut a new metro line yourself, but you can make a hole in a thin wall. Moreover, large types of monsters capable of attacking at the most unexpected moment can also perform the trick.
Weapon distribution system is now free. Previously, there was a strict binding of a certain type of “firearm” to a separate slot: you were allowed to carry one pistol, an assault rifle and a shotgun. From now on, the player is free to choose his own equipment. The modification system also contributes to this – you can put gadgets on the “trunks” that improve some of its specific characteristics. The types of weapons themselves, as one would expect, will become larger.
However, not all gameplay will be reduced to shooting enemies. IN Last Light will bring crippled stealth to a sane state. Artificial intelligence has acquired a couple of new convolutions, and therefore head-on collisions with an opponent are often not the best option for passing. 4A Games promises a player detection system traditional for stealth projects. Enemies will not be able to notice you in pitch darkness, but are very sensitive to loud sounds. Artem will often turn off power sources, fill fires with water and unscrew Ilyich’s light bulbs to get rid of excess light. The ability to quickly kill from behind will also be present. And, of course, the creators do not forget to repeat that the choice of playthrough style – quiet or loud – depends solely on the player’s preferences.
Metro 2033 was an amateur game. Its shooter component suffered from some shortcomings, and not everyone was able to get into the atmosphere. Last Light should raise the quality bar to a new level, which will undoubtedly benefit the series. Moreover, the creators honestly admit the “casual” nature of the project – the game will become accessible and understandable to everyone. However, such a decision does not seem to affect the gloomy atmosphere. And that’s the main thing.
